So would you like to be a superhero? As children, I’m sure many of us wanted to be Superman or Wonder Woman. Well now is your chance!
A few weeks ago, the government unveiled a new obesity strategy which is urging us to lose weight to beat coronavirus (COVID-19). This in turn will help to protect the NHS. This can only be a good thing!
Currently, obesity is one of the biggest health crises the country faces. Around 63% of adults in England are overweight or living with obesity. With regards to children, 1 in 3 are leaving primary school overweight or obese. The cost to the NHS is ÂŁ6 billion a year. This is a truly shocking situation!
So what can we do, and what does our government recommend?
- A ban on TV and online adverts for food which is high in fat, salt and sugar before 9pm
- End ‘buy 1 get 1 free’ on unhealthy food
- Display calories on menus
These are a few measures. A campaign to help lose weight, become more active, and eat better has also been introduced.
Now for us. Whether you’re Wonder Woman or Superman, you can do your bit.
Losing weight is hard, but making small changes can lead to a healthier, longer, fitter life.
Here are some suggestions:
- Keep a food diary
- Cut down on alcohol
- Aim for 10,000 steps per day
- Join WW or another organisation
Eating more than we need causes us to gain weight. Consuming 200 to 300 extra calories per day above the recommended daily guidelines, will make you put on weight.
The NHS recommends that in order to safely lose 1lb to 2lb each week, a man should eat no more than 1900kcal, and for women 1400kcal per day.
